Bungay Choral Society

120 Years

In October, 1888, the Rev. R. Sneyd called a meeting to form “a society for the cultivation of vocal and instrumental music in Bungay” - little could he have dreamed that 120 years later his “ambition” would be regularly presenting at least three concerts a year, crowned by a magnificent performance on 17th May, 2008, in St. Mary’s Church, Bungay, to celebrate its anniversary”.

The Bungay Choral Society which currently has around 60 members, meets every Thursday in the Orange Room at Emmanuel Church at 7.30pm. Our objective is "to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in choral music by the study and performance of choral works in the town and district".

The Society is affiliated to Making Music, the National Federation of Music Societies.

The Society is managed by a committee of 11 members, Chaired by Brandon Tobin, with Brenda Crockford (Hon. Treasurer), John Warnes (Concert Secretary and Vice-Chairman), Robin Farrar (Librarian), and Eddie Winter is the current Hon. Secretary. Our Hon. Conductor is Harvey Rathbone and our accompanist is Liz Vennard

The annual subscriptions for 2007/2008 are now £36 which is paid in two installments at the start of each half of the season. Young members who are still in full-time education enjoy free membership of the Society. Since our music is hired through the County Library, we also make a small charge for the loan of music to cover our costs. New members who join at the start of or during the season should pay their subscription only after they are certain that they wish to become members ; we suggest a period of 3 to 4 weeks should be long enough for most people to make up their minds.

If you have any questions or require further information, please don't hesitate to ask any Committee member or our Hon. Conductor.
