Sargy MannSargy MannSargy Mann will be signing copies of the new book “SARGY MANN probably the Best Blind Painter in Peckham” at the Cork Brick Gallery. 6 Earsham Street, Bungay Sfk NR35 1AG On Friday 20th June 6.30pm – 8pm and Saturday 21st June 11.30am – 2pm.

A selection of Sargy’s and his wife Frances’s paintings will also be on show until the end of June. Sargy Mann is an artist, but what makes him so unique in a profession that relies totally on sight, colours, textures, shapes and forms, is that Sargy is now blind and his remarkable story is told in “Sargy Mann - Probably the Best Blind Painter in Peckham”

After years of failing eyesight, Sargy became totally blind in 2005. His first paintings after this were of Spain the last subjects he had seen. In his most recent paintings of his wife Sargy’s brain uses tactile input instead of visual. He maps his picture on the canvas with blobs of “Blutac” The results are remarkable.

Not being able to see what colour objects were meant that Sargy could use any colour he “saw in his mind’s eye” and this was a breakthrough and he became more and more liberated in his use of colour. The book is based around twenty seven paintings chosen by the artist to represent different periods in his life as a painter. The first is from 1963 and the most recent is from 2007. The text by the artist himself.

Each chapter takes one of the twenty seven paintings as its starting point, but the text as a whole builds to tell the story of how he has continued to paint about the world as he sees and experiences it, while his sight has deteriorated to the point of total blindness. Each of the twenty seven paintings has been photographed by his son Peter Mann where they are hanging today.

The book, is designed by Peter Mann and his photographs show the artist with his family and at work in the studio and the garden. “Sargy Mann - Probably the Best Blind Painter in Peckham” is an inspiring story about how the artists overcame adversity in the shape of blindness, and continue to paint and not only shows the paintings but also gives a tremendous insight into the life of this remarkable man
