Frank Honeywood - Bungay Town Recorder"It was in 1979 that I became officially 'The Town Recorder and this all started in the autumn of 1976 when I first began to collect photographs of the town and district. A friend, Mr Paul Roe, asked me if I would help him to do an illustrated talk on old Bungay. To do a show lasting about an hour we needed roughly 100 photographs. At the time this appeared to be quite a task but we were soon to realise that there were hundreds of pictures about and we were able to get enough for a show in a very short time. It was agreed that I should search out the pictures and Paul would get them copied into slides. We did the first show in November 1976 and it was a huge success - so much so that we did a repeat of the same show in the following spring. Once again we had a very large appreciative audience. Some of the photographs used in the very first show were taken off some old glass negatives that were purchased in some auctions at nearby Flixton. These were proved to have been taken by a Mr Thomas Smith who had a shop at No. 3 Earsham Street. He is recorded as a photographer between 1890 and 1922 in addition to being a coach builder, grocer and feedman. Some of his work are of his shop, 'The Beeches' in Lower Olland Street c.1900 and Cold Bath House, Ditchingham c.1920" from the bottom of the common See more photographs from Thomas Smith and take a look at The Retrospect and the Bungay Photo Quiz
