Reflections with Frank Honeywood Part 2

Then and nowThe next photograph showing Mr Payne at No 56 was taken by a Mr Layneek a photographer from Beccles some time between 1930 and 1936

Could it be that the little girls in the picture are Mr Payne's daughters.

As a matter of interest the smaller picture shows the shop as it is in June of this year.

With regards to the shop opposite the Roman Catholic Church I cannot show a picture of it when Mr Payne occupied it but the next photograph shows the shop as it was when mr F R Wightman had it in 1910.

NorfolkHouse c.1910This photograph was taken from yet another town guide by the Bungay Urban District Council

As I was looking through Holy Trinity Magazine dated June 1935 I found another advert that proves Mr Payne was still at No 56 but in July the following month a similar advert states that he was at No 40 (Norfolk House) on the corner of Priory Lane

St Mary's Street c 1890

The picture (right) shows St Mary's Street c1890 giving a rough idea as to where the shop was situated. It has the horse and cart outside.

Mary also mentios the Roman Catholic Church and details of this can be seen on the 'Places of Worship' page in the Community section of this website.

Mary also says that the shop is now a Co-op and yes, it still is.

But how about this to finish with

Looking through a scrap book I found the picture (left) from the Beccles and Bungay Journal dated 30th January 1959 and the following article

This view of St Mary's Street Bungay, showing the new shop of Beccles Co-operative Society at the corner of Priory Lane, appears for Mrs Donald Hess.

Mrs Hess was formerly Miss Mary Payne and it was on the site of this new shop that her father Mr Cyril J Payne, for many years had a clothing store.

Mr Payne and his wife with two other daughters followed Mrs Hess to America only a few months after she herself had gone out there as a G.I. bride in April 1946...'

Best wishes to all that read this and many happy memories to Mary
