Bungay about 1907Reflections with Frank Honeywood

Once again we begin with three more pictures taken off glass negatives from the Thomas Smith collection. Frank has chosen these pictures as he believes they show the amazing versatility of this talented photographer at the turn of the century.

The first picture is unusual in as much as it was taken from an artists impression of a battle scene in the Boer War action before Brandfort 3rd May 1900.

Bungay Market Place about 1907

Photograph No. 2 shows the Three Tuns as it was in c 1900 before it was altered by Mr John James Doe. The clarity of the photograph is exceptional especially as it is over 100 years old and the camera has been set up to take a fine composition.

If you study the photograph you will notice the doorway is central with window on either side unlike today with the doorway on the left of the building with two windows on its right. Mr Doe removed the central door and later fixed it in No. 46 Beccles Road, a house he built a few years later

Family portrait about 1900Photograph No. 3 by Thomas Smith shows the inside of St. Mary's Church c 1880 with seats not pews. This is a fine example of interior photography. Remember, there was no electricity at that time!!
