HANDS is an organisation with an holistic approach to serving poor and disadvantaged communities in Northern Thailand and its borders. All funds raised will directly benefit these communities.

The Alban family and their friends in Malvem are organising a trip to Northern Thailand to help the local community and villages through Voluntary work.

That is 8th to the 24th February, and in conjunction with a local Thai group (HANDS Charity), and their own Malvern Church. My son-in law Dave and granddaughter Lucy, now 19, are going out there, but not Bridget. (She's helping out behind the scenes and doing the hard job of preparing the family for the trip).

Two of the planned tasks are particularly interesting. One is to set up a fish farm for a food source and lay/pipe water down 2 km from a mountain for this; and to improve the Community's water facilities.

The fish they eat and breed out there are called Tilapia and of the Cichlid family who keep their eggs in their mouth, and so easily accessed. More fascinating information on the species can be found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilapia. For bible reader's, it says here its called "St Peter's Fish" which was advised to be found with a shekel in its mouth in Matthew 17 vs. 22-27.

The 12-strong team contains both an electrical (Dave), engineering and environmental expert to build a filtration system and likely solar heating to keep fish breeding water temperatures higher over their winter nights. The other task is to dig the footings, establish facilities and help erect a pre-school building made of Teak costing £900 and a new concrete bridge to stop a whole communi.ty being cut off during the rainy season and flash floods.

Everyone going on the trip is funding their own fare and expenses for this venture to assist the poor and under-privileged near the Burmese border. What we need to raise is the funding costs for the actual materials involved, estimated at £3800.

As a great fish enthusiast and a maniac for anything to do with them, the opportunity was there for me to go and do something particularly interesting; worthwhile; and of use for the less fortunate in line with a lot of my own socialist ideals. So I am going to Thailand too - and asking you here to help me please with my fundraising effort for the materials to be used.

Most people take round a Sponsorship form before an event, but my scheme was to opt for one of the vaccinations to be done in my bum instead of my arm - hoping many who have found me a particular pain in the butt at times, may be most gratified by this!

You may prefer like I'm doing too, to nominate to buy the displaced and destitute refugees in the troubled border area a sack of rice for £8 instead of money for materials. Any money, however small, for what you hopefully will opt to support, would be greatly appreciated, and a cheque for these should be made out to "BRIDGET ALBAN" and forwarded to me here, hopefully. Thanks & Cheers.
