Dave Gladwell's Fishing Tips
Although this may sound a little sexually discriminative and drastic, it can be the unusual which pays dividends. However the "worms" in its many guises is my top tip to start the season off with. A reliable bait for fierce-fighting striped Perch; a tantalising titbit for bottom feeding Tench in flowing or still water. Don't expect too much Roach activity yet awhile so soon after spawning late in the river. The big beautiful big bronze Bream will soon hone in on your offerings if you have selected your swim carefully and introduced a little ground bait for the previous three days. Flaked maize or bread and bran mixed stiffly with a few free advance offerings will be ideal. Lob worms off the lawn after dark, or striped brandlings from the compost heap will do you well. Even the Eel will seek it out in the silt, shake its head, twist its tail, put a buckling bend in your rod and dance on the surface just before netting. Magic!
