446th Bombardment Group Memorial Dedication.
(more photos)

It was a great privilege to meet with members of the 446th Bomb Group Association who had travelled from the United States of America to pay tribute to the 456 young men killed in active service whilst stationed at Flixton during World War II.

The service took place at the Memorial, sited on the edge of the old airfield at Flixton. Tibutes were paid by Link Veazey and Alan Senior both of whom were stationed here and they shared vivid and painful memories of those days. In particular how two aircraft collided within minutes of landing having successfully completed a mission and all 22 men on board were killed.

As the memorial was unveiled the choral group sang 'The White Cliffs of Dover' and this was followed by Prayers led by Chaplain Capt. Chad Zielinski of the USAF 100th ARW/WC Mildenhall. The Last Post preceded the Silent Tribute and the service culminated with a flyover by a P-51 Mustang flown by Maurice Hammond as his own tribute.

After the Service all those in attendance went to St Mary's Church Flixton for refreshments and a short service of welcome and thanksgiving, led so well by Rev Sam Lee with participation by members of the Association. Lunch was served at nearby Flixton Buck.

Mr Alan Senior was moved to tears when he heard that the memory of his colleagues lives on through the Bungay website which in turn links to the www.446bg.com (the website dedicated to the group).... more photos
