The
Return of the Black Dog of Bungay
Those
of us who were brought up in the town are very familiar with the legend
of the Black Dog and have missed the sight of the Black Dog on the
weathervane in the centre of the town since its removal for repairs
over three years ago. Wedensday
29th October saw the Black Dog return to its rightful and Sanderling
Internet was on hand to take some spectacular photographs.

His life inspired Lilias Rider-Haggard to write her much acclaimed book

446th
Bombardment Group Memorial Dedication
Members of the 446th Bomb Group Association travelled from
the United States of America to pay tribute to the 456 young men killed
in active service whilst stationed at Flixton during World War II.

Earl of Homersfield has been honoured by the people of Valletta, the
capital of Malta for all that he did during Operation Pedestal from
10th - 15th August 1942. On this 61st anniversary year we tell his story
with pride.

Americans in Bungay

flew with the 446th Bomb Group, stationed at Flixton during the war
and Steve has produced a fascinating insight into the way they were
received by the people of Bungay. The article is not about the missions
- (these can be seen on Steve's amazing website www.446bg.com)
but about all that Bungay meant to these young men.

The
Control Tower at Flixton - 1943
"That
was my introduction to flying control in the United Kingdom. After that
first mission, the 446th made an enviable record of 273 missions, 7,259
sorties with only 28 aircraft lost and 58 missing in action." The
planes took off from slippery runways and returned to base in snowstorms."

is now based in Suffolk, and last year could be seen at her stand at
the end of the pier in Southwold.Lesley
now has a workshop in Halesworth where she can be seen at work. In addition
there is a range of her work on display, some for sale, as well as examples
to give an idea for that extra special gift.

American and a Bungay Halfpenny
Following
Steve Roat's highly acclaimed contribution on the Americans in Bungay,
this amazing story from Flixton has come to light thanks to material
kindly supplied by Miss Eileen Stone, now retired headmistress of Flixton
Primary School.
