Feature ArticlesSherriff and Bell - Pure nostalgia for the home and garden Rivalry at a local auction and an amazing coincidence brought together two Bungay women who have since formed their own new company called Sherriff & Bell. Sarah Sherriff moved with her partner and young daughter to the village of Thwaite St Mary last year. The couple set out on a major renovation of their pretty cottage and Sarah's dream was to decorate and furnish the cottage with items from the past to give it an authentic feel.
And it was the search for an original enamel bread bin that brought Sarah together with Jackie Bell. "I was looking for a bread bin for my own kitchen," explained Jackie. "I left a commission bid at a local auction and was really disappointed when I didn't get it by one bid. "The following week I was invited to Sarah's house for a cup of coffee and there, taking pride of place in her kitchen was my bread bin!" Plucking up courage to mention it, the two women had a laugh about the incident, and over more coffee the idea for a new business was formed. Specialising in vintage items for the home and garden, and also new homewares with a vintage-inspired theme, Sherriff & Bell is designed to satisfy the demand for those wishing to acquire beautiful things for their homes which evoke the nostalgia of a bygone era. "I love blending the old with the new," says Sarah. "We started selling things such as enamel bread bins, flour bins and colanders, along with other vintage kitchen wares; bits and pieces that aren't too expensive but which look fantastic in a country home."
They also make things for their range, including lavender and herb bags, decorative wreaths and appliqued pictures. Other items made by local crafts people include peg rails, bird boxes and willow pieces. The company made its first public appearance at the Suffolk Show but is otherwise based at Broadview Cottage, Thwaite St Mary.
