Bungay to be first town in Britain to hear the 1759 Guadagnini violin !

Listeners to radio 3 may have heard an exciting new recording of Bach’s Concerto for 2 violins by Richard Tognetti - leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra - and Helena Rathbone - the principal second violin and Assistant Director. (Photos show Helena playing)

Helena is the daughter of Harvey Rathbone who conducts the Bungay Choral Society. She performs on a 1759 Guadagnini violin kindly made available to her by The Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Richard Tognetti has also acquired, from an anonymous Australian donor, a Guarneri “del Gesu” violin valued at £4 million. “The sound these fantastic instruments make can only improve the orchestra’s reputation,” said Helena - though The Times has already awarded it the accolade of “the best chamber orchestra on the planet”!

After a forthcoming tour to America, Helena will be bringing the Guadagnini violin to Bungay, where she will lead the orchestra for the Bungay Choral Society’s concert on May 19th in a performance of Vivaldi’s “ Gloria” and John Rutter’s “Requiem”. Helena will also play solo items accompanied by the pianist, Gretel Dowdeswell.

The concert will be in St. Mary’s Church, Bungay on May 19th at 7.30pm. Tickets:- £7.00, accompanied children under 14 free:- available from Wightmans of Bungay, tel. 01986 89 2889 or, by telephoning 01986 89 4132 (or, if unsold, at the door from 6.45 pm.)
