GEOFF'S
GARDEN NOTES FOR FEBRUARY
Hopefully after the cold frosty days of December and dull days of January
we may get some nice sunny days during February. There is always a possibility
of frost and snow during this month but the past few years have given
us some nice weather during this period.
When the
soil dries out a bit firm it down round any newly planted shrubs. Dig
over any bare patches on the vegetable plot ready for planting when
the weather is suitable. Go easy with the hoe in borders where bulbs
will soon be pushing up their shoots, its better to gently prod about
with a hand fork if you want to freshen up the soil.
Purchase
your seed potatoes and stand them up in a tray in a light frostproof
place so the shoots can develop. There is such a choice now with so
many varieties coming on to the market, all with their own merits, but
I like to stick with the well tried varieties:- Foremost or Pentland
Javelin for earlies and Cara or Maris Piper for a maincrop.
Prune clematis
except the small flowered earlies, roses can also be pruned at the end
of the month if weather conditions permit, also check over fruit trees
and remove dead or unwanted branches. Lawns can be spiked to help drainage
where moss is a problem, after spiking spread some sharp sand over the
area and brush in.

Fred
had gone to visit his 7 year old grandson and was having trouble trying
to open the front garden gate. His grandson stood watching him and after
Fred had managed to open it the little lad said " I could have
told you how to open it Grandad but I couldn't because its supposed
to keep me in.
