GEOFF'S
GARDEN NOTES FOR MAY
What a wonderful spell of weather we have just experienced in April,
lots of sunshine, very little rain and just a touch of frost here and
there although the nights have been a bit chilly. The
spring flowers, especially the daffodils have been excelling themselves.
As it
has been dry watch out for any plants that appear to be wilting, if
so give them some water to help them along.( By the time you are reading
these notes we may be in a monsoon situation, if so ignore this part)
If you
are leaving the spring bulbs In give them a dusting of fertilizer to
help them develop for next year and don't cut off the foliage for at
least six weeks from flowering, Growmore or something similar is suitable
or If you prefer an organic one use bone meal or mulch with well rotted
manure or home made compost.
Harden
off the annuals ready for planting out at the end of the month and keep
the hoe going on the vegetable plot to prevent weeds using up the moisture
which the vegetables require. Keep the grass cut and if you use a selective
weedkiller or moss killer on your lawn do not use the clippings on your
compost heap for at feast six weeks.
Make sure
if you can that all vegetable waste from the kitchen is put on the compost
heap) so keep a container near your wheelie bin for this purpose.
Finally,
don't work to hard, take time to sit down and admire your handywork
and don't be tempted to get up to pull up a weed you have missed, it
can wait and won't be going anywhere.
Don't
forget the annual plant sale on the 18th at 38 Wingfield St. and the
Earsham St. Garden Market on the 19th where bargains can sometimes be
found.
Fred
always liked to help at the Bungay Marathon but as he always seemed
to be in the way Jim sent him out to one of the villages en route to
make sure the runners went the right way While he was waiting for the
runners to appear a car drew up and the occupant asked him the way to
Beccles.
Fred
duly obliged and the occupant asked him what he was doing out there
on his own. Fred told him he was there to show the marathon runners
the way to Bungay. "Oh" said the occupant "I have a similar
job to you. I am a vicar and I show people the way to Heaven" "Cor"
said Fred "I bet not many of them get there, you don't even know
the way to Beccles"
