History of the Town Reeve

The Diary of The Town Reeve

February has been rather quiet as far as The Town Reeve is concerned so there will be a combined February / March diary at the end of the month.

Stephen Went - Town Reeve of BungayStephen Went - January 2005

Well after a hectic December, January has been a relatively quiet month, my only official function was to launch the 15th Brains of Bungay Quiz Competition. It's amazing to think this is the 15th year, for those of you who haven't been before why not come along one Friday - it's a light hearted evening and only costs £1.

The main thing for January is setting the dates of the meetings for the Town Trust. The Town Trust consists of 34 members, 24 appointed by the Trust and 10 by the Town Council. The full Trust meets 4 times a year, however there are also committees that meet as well. Each of these committees has a chairman and report to the main Trust. Members of the Trust are allocated a committee. The committees are as follows:-

  • Almshouses - This committee deals with the day to day running of the Trust's almhouses - being the ones on Outney Road and 5 in Staithe Close
  • Finance - This committee deals with Trust's finances and also with requests for grants
  • Market - This committee looks after the Butter Cross which the Trust owns and the weekly Thursday markets
  • Town Lands - This committee oversees the land and property owned by the Trust.
  • Castle Hills - This committee deals with the Castle Hills again which belongs to the Trust.

So as you can see there is always a lot to do ensuring that the assets of the Town Trust are properly maintained and looked after.

Another meeting attended this month is for the Bungay Festival which takes place in July. The first Festival was organised by Mary Kent when she was Town Reeve, thankfully a hard working committee have taken over the role! There are lots of events planned for the fortnight.

Talking of events I will be hosting a Coffee Morning on March 19th at St Edmunds Hall (10am - Noon) to raise funds for my appeal for the year. I have decided to support youth organisations in the town and also a charity I personally support in London called Kids Company. This charity helps children in deprived areas of London who are so much worse off then our own young people. Please come along on March 19th and bring your friends.
