The Diary of The Town Reeve

Stephen Went - Town Reeve of BungayStephen Went - March 2005

Things have started to get busy again this month! Before the month started I was invited to join the Rotary Club to celebrate 100 years of the Rotary movement. This was a very enjoyable evening and I learnt a great deal about what Rotary does both worldwide and in the local community.

Brains of Bungay finals night took place on March 12th - even though I was there as scorer each evening I was also there in my capacity as Town Reeve and was asked to make the presentations. The quiz seems to go from strength to strength and a meeting will take place shortly to start planning the 2006 quiz!

I also attended the Rotary Club's Charter and Ladies Evening again another thoroughly enjoyable evening at Wortwell Community Centre. The following day I attended the memorial service for Charles Maidment a former Town Reeve and GP in Bungay, a very remarkable man.

The same evening, after just catching Norwich lose again I went to the Choral Society's performance of Stainer's Crucifixion, a piece written in Victorian times but is still popular today. It contains a number of well known hymns including All For Jesus. Also it contains the very well know Fling Wide the Gates.

I am hoping to plant 60 trees in Bungay to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII. I agreement from WDC and SCC to my plan, and I have been in contact with a supplier who has suggested that the best time to plant will be the autumn. The trees supplied will be in the region of 10-14 feet tall so should be a deterrent to vandals. They will cost in the region of £70 each and I will be looking for sponsors for a whole or part of a tree! Also I am looking for suitable sites so if you have any in mind please let me know.
