The Diary of The Town Reeve

Stephen Went - Town Reeve of BungayStephen Went - May 2005

A bit of doom and gloom this month - last month I reported on my optimism for Norwich staying in the Premiership - as we all know this was a bit premature and we are back in the Coca-Cola Championship next season!

Actually on the whole, as Town Reeve, May has been relatively quiet. I went to the Garden Street Market and helped to launch Bungay in Bloom for 2005.

I did a stint on our stall and lots of people stopped and asked who I was and were really interested in the office of Town Reeve.

This month has also seen the cycle of quarterly meetings of the Trust. One of the meetings was of the Market Committees. The Butter Cross and Market Place are owned by the Town Trust and as such the income from the Market Rents goes to the Trust.

This year the Butter Cross will be repainted (hopefully in early June) and we have reviewed the weekly market tolls for the coming year. Having a quiet month is quite good as I was involved in Bungay Theatre Group's production of Off The Hook.

Also, if I may indulge myself for a short time - I was lucky enough, on a personal note, to go to the Royal Opera House in London to see a production by the Royal Ballet of Swan Lake. Dancing the role of Odette/Olinda was Darcey Bussell and Roberto Bolle was dancing the role of Siegfried. This was an amazing evening and I feel there are not enough superlatives to describe the experience. I have always wanted to go to the Opera House and also wanted to see Darcey Bussell so I managed to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

On the last day of the month I attended the opening of the Skate Park near the Fire Station, this is a fantastic asset for the youth in the town and I hope it gets well used. The committee has worked tirelessly over a number of years to get this project going and they must be heartily congratulated. As you will recall I mentioned about planting 60 trees in and around Bungay to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War 2.

This has not been forgotten, I have applied to a special fund to try and secure some money towards the project. Once this is known I will be able to advise more on the price. It is hoped that the planting will take place in October. I have now completed 6 months as Town Reeve, where has that time gone?

It will soon be time for me to start thinking of who my successor will be - of course I am quite entitled to reappoint myself!
