The Diary of The Town Reeve

Stephen Went - Town Reeve of BungayStephen Went - June 2005

Flaming June they say and it truly has been 'flaming June' as I sit typing this it is still cloudy breezy and cool, still we are promised a hot weekend!

The month started with a number of events. On June 2 nd I attended the Southwold Charter Fair and Lunch, I was accompanied by the Deputy Town Reeve Diana Belcher. As well as a very enjoyable lunch we took a ride on the dodgems with the other civic dignitaries, needless to say I didn't let Diana drive! On June 5 th I attended the Civic Service at Eye with their new Mayor and a reception at the Town Hall afterwards. I had to literally knock dozens of cubs out of the way to get to the food!! On the Monday it was a much more civilised affair the annual meeting of the local branch of the NSPCC at Somerleyton Hall with refreshments in the Orangery. It was a very interesting evening and I learnt a lot about the work of the charity and congratulations must go to the Bungay committee for their fund raising efforts.

On June 9th the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk came to Bungay to present Kathleen Bowerbank with her medal appointed in the New Years Honours List. This was a very special occasion and took place at Holmwood. Kathleen has been extremely generous to the town and thoroughly deserves the honour.

What a week that was I met Lord Somerleyton, Lord Tollemache and Lord Prior quick someone bring me back down to earth!

I then had a couple of weekends away with friends to recharge my batteries before the Bungay Festival.

Many of you will have heard me rashly talking about doing a tandem sky dive - well I am definitely going to do this in aid of the NSPCC and Kids Company, hopefully it will take place in early August so I will no doubt be after you to sponsor me. There it is in writing now I can't possibly chicken out!.

There are many excellent events during the Festival which I hope people will support but I would like to draw your attention to 3 events with which I am involved.
