The Diary of The Town Reeve
Well what a month July has been - very busy mainly due to the Bungay Festival. This was an excellent two weeks with something for everyone, the committee and organisations involved must be congratulated on providing such a varied event. The month started with an invite to drinks at Glemham Hall hosted by the High Sheriff of Suffolk, luckily the weather stayed kind and we were able to enjoy the gardens. I then managed to get back to Bungay to attend the launch of the exhibition at Bungay Library - When Bombs Fell on Bungay, an excellent well put together exhibition. Saturday July 2nd is still a bit of a blur, but I think this is what happened! In the morning I went to the Art Exhibition and ended up buying 2 pictures. We were then at the Castle to hoist the Bigod flag to launch the start of the festival. We then processed with the children taking part in the fancy dress to Skinner's Meadow and judged the competition which was won by Ben the Flowerpot Man. Then it was off to judge the carnival parade and take part in the parade. After that I went back to civvies and listened to the bands and watched the fireworks. The Lions did a brilliant job. On the Sunday I visited the children's 5 A Side at the Maltings Meadows and presented the prizes. There were loads of teams taking part and the field was packed. During the Festival I attended lots of events - way to many to list here but it was very enjoyable and rather tiring. One I should like to mention was the service to commemorate 60 years since the end of WW2. It was a privilege for me and the Mayor to lay a wreath on behalf of the town at the War Memorial and to take part in the service. I also managed to get to Southwold for the launch of their Summer Theatre Season with a performance of Hobsons Choice. If you get the chance do try to get one of the shows they really are first class. Towards the end of July I welcomed the Anglia in Bloom judges to Bungay - fingers crossed for a good result - we will hear at the end of September. I then attended the dedication of the new tower at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral in the presence of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. This was a very special event and I feel very lucky that it happened during my year of office. My tandem sky dive is fast approaching - August 13th to be precise but there is still time to sponsor me it is in aid of NSPCC and Kids Company. I also celebrate (if that's the right word) my 40th birthday on August 18th and the new footie season starts to loads to look forward to. Just a short note about my plans for tree planting - this is proving to be a bit difficult as I was hoping to get a grant which was not forthcoming - but watch this space I will try and sort something on a smaller scale !
